We had such a fantastic week of learning! We cannot believe it was our second last week together. The year has gone so fast! We had two big highlights from the week, learning about Indigenous Culture and our Tower Garden Salad Celebration. Wednesday, June 21, 2023 was National Indigenous People’s Day. It was a great opportunity for the grade 4s to share with the grade 3s what they have learned this month about the history of Indigenous People in Alberta. We also took some time to go a bit deeper into Indigenous Culture, listening to Indigenous music like the song Ukiuk by the Jerry Cans and also learning about the three Indigenous Flags that were gifted to our school. We also had an assembly and the Land Acknowledgement that we did at our sharing assembly was used for this one. We were very honoured that they asked us to use it. Finally, we all went outside for a whole school sit spot. Here are a few more insights from our class about National Indigenous People’s Day and our learnin

What an exciting and eventful week!! So much happened for us in Room 6 and we had so much learning! On Tuesday the HAWCs helicopter landed in our school field! We were able to hear all about it from the pilot, mechanic and police officer that works on the helicopter. We learned that HAWCs stands for Helicopter Air Watch for Community Safety. We also learned about how it flies, it’s top speed and how much it weighs. We applied our “observing beyond the obvious” as we sketched in our journal. Another exciting part of the week was our guest Rugby coach! We learned how to hold and   pass a rugby ball. We also played a lot of games to practice running, passing the ball and protecting our flags. We also have been doing a lot of watercolour this year in art. On Monday and Tuesday we used a wet on wet technique to make beautiful dandelion pictures that showed movement and applied the “rule of thirds”. We learned that it is important to use this rule to make our art more interesting for

The highlight of our week was most definitely our Fish Release at McLean Pond. It was such an amazing experience! We definitely want to thank Ms. Rooke and our fantastic volunteers because they helped Mrs. Cooper and Ms. Bouchard make this wonderful trip possible. Here is what some of our classmates had to say about the day: “When we were releasing the fish, we couldn’t just let them go into the water. We had to check to make sure the water was clean enough for them to live in. We tested the turbidity, the pH, dissolved oxygen and the temperature. When we were releasing the fish we also had to put the pond water into the baggie so they could get used to the water.” – a grade 3 student It was really fun when we were releasing the fish, but we couldn’t just put them in the pond because they needed to acclimatize. We had to put them in a baggie and pour some of the pond water into the bag with the fish so they would get used to it.” –E.B.A. I thought it [the day] was kind of happy

This week we focused on writing, putting all the skills we learned this year into one narrative. After visualizing & planning, we did a rough copy of our ideas. Mrs. Cooper noticed that many of us are much more confident in our writing and our ability to express our ideas. We then used our revising and editing checklists to refine our work. Ask us what we wrote about! We are busy getting ready for our fish release on Wednesday! It’s hard to believe it’s time to let them go already. This week, Sarah from the Fish In e program came to our school to learn about our inquiry. She said we are taking great care of our fish and they look so healthy! She also answered many questions we had about our fish and the work we have been doing. Please remember that our trip is on Wednesday. Mrs. Cooper still needs one more volunteer. If you are able to join us and have your Police Clearance done with the office, please email her to let her know. Also be sure to ask us about: Our three day
