Just a short post this week because we
had a short week - but as always lots of learning! The highlight of our week
was having Ms. Sharon teach us about textiles, making fabric and fabric dyes. It is part of our artist in residence work. We are making one part of a larger
art installation about "Tables Around the World". We are using our
knowledge of the land in Peru, Tunisia, Ukraine, India and Alberta to
understand what materials are available and how they might influence the
textiles or fabric that comes from that area. We will be continuing this work
next week as well. We can't wait to see the final product! We continued to develop our reading
skills during book club. We are practicing reading "like we talk" so
it is smooth and interesting to listen to. We are also exploring quotation
marks and dialogue and trying to change our voices when different characters
speak.
In math we began to explore the
relationship between multiplication and division, and are continuing to explore
fact families. We are also practicing different strategies for memorizing our
multiplication facts. Did you know that in the new curriculum, grade 3s need to
know their multiplication and related division facts up to 10 x 10, and grade
4s need to know up to 12 x 12? Ask us how to play "salute" and "multiplication
war" to help is improve our recall!!
Mrs. Cooper also wanted to share a
quick note about Valentines Day. The staff has decided that we would like to
focus on the Montessori virtues of "caring for others" and
"caring for place". For that reason, we have made the decision as a
school to not give out valentines at school. Instead, we will be choosing a
class "caring project" and continuing to look at how we can reduce,
reuse and recycle to show caring for our planet.
