June 19-23

We had such a fantastic week of learning! We cannot believe it was our second last week together. The year has gone so fast! We had two big highlights from the week, learning about Indigenous Culture and our Tower Garden Salad Celebration.

Wednesday, June 21, 2023 was National Indigenous People’s Day. It was a great opportunity for the grade 4s to share with the grade 3s what they have learned this month about the history of Indigenous People in Alberta. We also took some time to go a bit deeper into Indigenous Culture, listening to Indigenous music like the song Ukiuk by the Jerry Cans and also learning about the three Indigenous Flags that were gifted to our school. We also had an assembly and the Land Acknowledgement that we did at our sharing assembly was used for this one. We were very honoured that they asked us to use it. Finally, we all went outside for a whole school sit spot. Here are a few more insights from our class about National Indigenous People’s Day and our learnings:

  • I learned that your handprint can be a flag. Flags are important because they represent who you are. Our school got three flags and we keep them in the office. The flags are Indigenous flags. – ZK
  • On Indigenous Peoples day, we learned that everything can be a flag. Something that is important to you can be a flag, - FT
  • We learned about the 7 sacred teachings and how each teaching is represented in an animal. There was one Indigenous boy that got all the 7 sacred teachings. Whoever has them all, will live a happy life – LS
  • We learned about smudging and how smudging is very cultural to the Indigenous people. This is what they did at ceremonies and gatherings. I thought it was cool that we got to see a smudge kit and look at the sage, sweet grass, tobacco and cedar. – EH

On Friday we also had our Salad Celebration! It was so much fun to eat our Science. A huge thank you to Ms. Bouchard for teaching us about the tower garden and how you can grow a plant without soil. Here are some other things our class had to say about the tower garden and our Salad Day:

  • I really liked the tower garden because we got to see how plants go through their life cycle and how they grow – FT
  • I really liked our salad celebration because it was a lot of fun to grow something at school and then to use it for our snack. – KJ
  • It was fun because you don’t really get to eat your science, it’s not like we got to eat our fish (that would be sad), but we got to eat our plants. – LS
  • I thought that it tasted really good too because I think that we cared for it with a lot of love and that’s why it tasted so good. We couldn’t have done it without our teachers and they got all the stuff. -EH
  • The salad was nice and juicy. We used the tower garden and we used seeds to grow plants that we harvested. We added water and nutrients. – WL
  • I loved to see the plants grow because I had no idea that plants could only grow with water and sunlight. They do need nutrients too. - SA

As we enter into our final week of school, Mrs. Cooper also has a few very important announcements:

  • On Tuesday we are taking our final walking field trip of the year. Please see the School Messenger sent home on Sunday.
  • Our class will have their final theme day Beach Day, on Wednesday, June 28. Students can dress “beachy”, but please no bathing suits.
  • Thursday June 29 is the last day of school for students. It is a full day. We will be having a goodbye assembly at 9:00am. Please make sure your child has a backpack and/or extra plastic bags to bring all of their items home.
  • If you know in advance that your child is leaving for vacation sooner than Thursday, please send me an email so I can ensure that they bring all of their personal items home.
  • If your family plans have changed and your child will not be returning to Lake Bonavista and you have not yet informed me or the school office, please send me a quick email.
