Thank you to all the families that visited our classroom on Thursday. It was wonderful to show you all that we are doing already.  We hope you enjoyed visiting our space. In Math we are working on using logic and efficent strategies to solve problems. In problem solving and when exploring place value, we have been talking about benchmark or friendly numbers. These are numbers that we can work with, or skip count by, easily.  P.O also wanted to explain that in math, "We are learning about number lines and how we can show our benchmark numbers on a number line. We rolled dice to find out what numbers we were going to show on our number line. Our benchmark numbers are the markings on our number line. We know they are our benchmark numbers because they connect with a 5, a 2 or a zero at the end. Usually they end in zeros.”  We hope everyone at home has heard about our Wishtree design challenge. This week we began building our structure. We took our plans and found the common ideas i

It was another busy and exciting week in Room 6! We continued to work on our running endurance to get ready for the Terry Fox Run, we had a virtual presentation from the Calgary Public Library and we worked together to build our understanding in so many areas! We also wrote our blog together to help add detail and explain our week. The highlight of the week for most of the class was the introduction of our design challenge. You may have heard that we are going to build a scene from our book Wishtree. Here's how we would describe our design challenge: “We need to make Red, a Red Oak tree in our book, so we need to have red leaves and red bark. We need to make Bongo out of clay or paper to make him look realistic.” –P.O.  “We have to design what we needed to build a big tree that looks pretty realistic.”-K.J.  “We have to plan out the materials that we have to use and we have to draw out what we have to build.”-B.E  “We need to make a tree but we are trying to make it 3D so we don’

Wow! Our days and weeks are going so fast in room 6! This week we continued to use our routines and organizational skills to support our learning and to be our best! We have math routines in place and have started word ladders and Spellie to support our word work. In math, we used many materials, conversations and math routines to better understand our number system. We found patterns in place value and used them as a class to count all the way to 100 Billion! We are also continuing to explore how a number can be composed in different ways using place value. Ask us how many tens there are in 180. Mrs. Cooper has started reading us Wishtree by Katherine Applegate. We have learned a lot about the two main characters, Red and Bongo. Ask us how we would describe them and who is an optimist and who is a pessimist. Red is a tree and the book described his leaves changing colours. To learn more about leaves changing colours, we are learning how to annotate a nonfiction text to help our unde

It was a wonderful and exciting first two days in Room 6.  We discussed how routines and organization can help us be successful as learners and what kinds of things we need to do to be our best. Everyone in the class helped to set up their books and bins, and we also talked about how we set up pages for organization.  Below are a few photos of what we did in math and the math routines we are working on. We collaborated and worked together to solve problems and represent numbers. Be sure to also ask us about our "Two Truths and a Lie" writing and the "First Day Jitters" book that Mrs. Cooper read on the first day of school. A reminder that Monday is a holiday, so we will see everyone on Tuesday. Have a great long weekend!
