First, a huge thank you to all of the parents and guardians who were able to meet with Mrs. Cooper virtually or in person. It was wonderful to connect, share learning and next steps. Mrs. Cooper would also like to thank Mr. Quinn for leading teaching this last week while she was recovering, and to the students for demonstrating their LBS and Montessori virtues. Mr. Quinn shared that our class was the best class that he has had in a very long time. Way to go Room 6!! This week we worked on many things: Continuing to explore the qualities of interesting and exciting personal narratives and implementing some of those qualities into our writing. Listening to books read by Mr. Quinn and doing a “first”, “next”, “then” retell with an illustration caption. Reading and exploring about tectonic plates and the formation of mountains to lead into our learning about rocks and minerals, and landforms in Alberta and around the world. Observing or worm decomposition, what worms eat and some r

This week we continued to develop our skills in reading, writing, number sense, operation and algebraic thinking. We practiced our observation skills in science, sending and receiving in physical education, map work and questioning in social studies and so much more. In math, we are exploring what addition and subtraction means and why it is important to understand the concepts of adding and subtracting in order to help us develop our number sense and algebraic thinking. We explored how to show with materials, on a number line or in a drawing what an equation with an unknown amount means. We also practiced our skills in estimation to help us understand if answers are reasonable when we are using operations with numbers. In writing, we are exploring how to write great personal narratives. We are focusing on the learning intention “I can used a structured writing process to organize and share messages” and “I can make sure my writing is smooth, natural and easy to read aloud”. This wee

We began our week with a discussion on gratitude, and why it is important to be grateful for what we have. We discussed why it is especially important to reflect on the service of soldiers and how their efforts and sacrifices improve our quality of life. For Remembrance Day, we created a gratitude wreath that we displayed this week. On Remembrance Day, we were very luck that Ms. Burnham shared some very special family heirlooms. We looked at the special items and discussed what we noticed and what we wondered about them: Harrison wondered, “What the flight badge was with the eagle on it and why there were three.” Another grade three student wondered, “Did he win a medal? Was he in WWI or WWII? Are any of these from WWI?” Ellie questioned, “Why would someone get badges, especially while they are in war.” Darius was curious, “What are the ages [of the objects] and how did they get the badges.” Mrs. Cooper shared some of the history of the medals that she learned from Ms. Burn

What a fun week of learning we had in Room 6! The week started out with Halloween. It was  great to see all of the fun costumes and do some Halloween related activities. In math we examined the pumpkin seeds that Mrs. Cooper took from our pumpkin and made an estimate about how many seeds there were. Then Mrs. Cooper taught us about using a ‘referent’. A referent is “ when you know how many there are ” (– a grade 3 student) and you use that to help you make an estimate. We also talked about the parts of speech and used them to make a Mad Lib story. Here is how Sky describes what we did: “First for our Monster Mad Libs we had a list of things that we had to write down, for example adjectives and nouns. Once we were done that we got a story sheet so we would write down our nouns and adjectives but not in random order. We would write the first word on the first blank and the second word on the second blank. Finally, we read the stories and they turned out super funny!” But there was
