This week was another fast week in our room. To continue to explore our question “How can we celebrate differences in ourselves and in others?” we decided it was important to learn about other cultures to understand differences so that we can better understand differenecs in other people. After reading in groups, we learned that culture is “the way people live” and includes things like the clothes people wear, the food they eat, the languages they speak, their celebrations, traditions, art, music, dancing, beliefs and religion. And did you know that Diwali ended this week? We did some research and learned Diwali is an Indian celebration: That “is also called Festival of Lights” – a grade 3 student That “is the most biggest celebration in India” – a grade 4 student Where “they eat a lot of sweets” – a grade 3 student That “takes place in November or October depending on the moon” – a grade 3 student E.Y. also read a myth about how Diwali began and explained, “there was a kin

We had another busy week in Room 6! We really enjoyed the last few days of nice weather, being outside for physical education, to collect leaves and to explore natural and human created waste.  A reminder to all families to have students dress for the weather. Students are outside for recess daily and we are often outside for physical education or other curricular learning. This week was waste reduction week. We talked about what waste is and why it is important to manage our human waste. We learned a little bit about the ways to dispose of household waste in Calgary and started to explore "what goes where". We also surveyed our class to see what kind of waste we had in our snacks this week. In physical education this week, we were focusing on throwing, specifically using the Discs (Frisbees) and bean bangs. We learned how changing different parts of our body movements can improve our throws. We also explored the learning intentions I can demonstrate what active living looks

Our class is loving the beautiful weather and having the opportunity to be outside. We had a few special learning moments that happened because we are getting to be great observers. The first happened when we were lining up from being outside for physical education. One of our classmates looked to the sky and saw far in the distance a group of dark coloured birds in the sky. The birds all flew together, first making a line and then swooping in together to make a tight dark ball of birds. They were too far away for us to count them, but it looked like hundreds of birds flying together in a synchronized pattern. Then they would fly into a wavy line and then back into a ball.  Our class was memorized as we watched them. It was beautiful. Mrs. Cooper has an idea about what kinds of birds they might have been, but as a class we are hoping to do research this week to find out more.  (Note: Mrs. Cooper wasn't able to take a photo, but it looked like this one below taken by Greg Saulmon po

It was such a busy week that Mrs. Cooper didn’t even have time to get student input into our blog. We had school pictures, time with our buddies, lots of math learning, word exploration, poetry writing, two walking field trips….and so much more! Be sure to ask us about the best part of our week. In writing, we did a free write where we could each decide what we wanted to write about, while being sure to focus writing in complete sentences and also adding detail so our writing wasn’t boring. We also wrote about the setting in our book so that next week we can make our props and other details for our novel set. When we did this, it was important to reflect on what details we heard in the book and how we could communicate them in clear ways.  Some of our favorite writing however was from our walking field trips. We watched the leaves fall to the ground and brainstormed the many words we could use to describe them. Some of the words we came up with were: dancing, gliding, floating, twirlin

The most exciting part of our week this week was finishing building the Wishtree as we continued to explore the learning intentions I can design a solution to a practical problem, and I can construct a structure and explain my choices.  First, we looked at all of the bases that we had available and we talked about the advantages and disadvantages of each. Then we voted on the one we wanted to use.  After that, we again got to choose which group we wanted to go into to solve the next design challenge.  J.H explained: “Some of us did the branches and some of us did the base and hollows. We made the branches by cutting the bigger branches. Some of them we made holes for the branches to go in it to make a shape. We put it in the hole because the tape kind of does not really help that much. The hole held the branches in place so all we had to do was tape it together.”  After that Mrs. Cooper put paper on it to help with the asthetics . Asthethics means the look of it or the decorations.
