It was another busy and exciting week in Room 6! We continued to work on our running endurance to get ready for the Terry Fox Run, we had a virtual presentation from the Calgary Public Library and we worked together to build our understanding in so many areas! We also wrote our blog together to help add detail and explain our week.

The highlight of the week for most of the class was the introduction of our design challenge. You may have heard that we are going to build a scene from our book Wishtree. Here's how we would describe our design challenge:

“We need to make Red, a Red Oak tree in our book, so we need to have red leaves and red bark. We need to make Bongo out of clay or paper to make him look realistic.” –P.O.

 “We have to design what we needed to build a big tree that looks pretty realistic.”-K.J.

“We have to plan out the materials that we have to use and we have to draw out what we have to build.”-B.E

“We need to make a tree but we are trying to make it 3D so we don’t just want to paint it and have animals from the book on it.”-E.M.

In writing, our focus was to make sure that we are making our writing interesting for our readers. We can do this by making sure our sentences don't all start the same way and by adding details. Specifically:

“We wrote about what we like and we made a good copy. We also made heart maps.” –E.K.
"Our focus of our writing this week was to not make a list when we write. We had to use better words than ‘I like’ and also add details.”-D.R.D.
“Mrs. Cooper also wanted us to add an introductory sentence to know what the person is going to read about.” -K.J.
“We wrote about ourselves so people could know us better.”-E.Y.

Because we are caring for our many plants in our classroom, we also looked closely at their structures. We are trying to understand their different needs so we can best care for them.

There is still so much more that we are working on! Be sure to ask us about:

  • Spellie and Word Ladders in word work;
  • How we feel about our 1km run;
  • Our class novel Wishtree and the new character we learned about;
  • Numberlines, breaking numbers down into their place value and all the ways we can represent a number;
  • What we learned about Terry Fox; and
  • Why flags are at half mast.
Mrs. Cooper also wants to make sure all of our grown-ups know about our Terry Fox Run coming up this week.  Please see the information below:

Lake Bonavista School is proud to be participating in this year’s Terry Fox School Run. Our run will take place on Wednesday, September 21 at 12:40pm following Room 2’s sharing assembly. Let’s get our fundraising going and show everyone how we can “Try like Terry”! To donate: https://schools.terryfox.ca/LakeBonavista. Together, we can all make a difference.
