September 19-22

Thank you to all the families that visited our classroom on Thursday. It was wonderful to show you all that we are doing already.  We hope you enjoyed visiting our space.

In Math we are working on using logic and efficent strategies to solve problems. In problem solving and when exploring place value, we have been talking about benchmark or friendly numbers. These are numbers that we can work with, or skip count by, easily.  P.O also wanted to explain that in math, "We are learning about number lines and how we can show our benchmark numbers on a number line. We rolled dice to find out what numbers we were going to show on our number line. Our benchmark numbers are the markings on our number line. We know they are our benchmark numbers because they connect with a 5, a 2 or a zero at the end. Usually they end in zeros.”

We hope everyone at home has heard about our Wishtree design challenge. This week we began building our structure. We took our plans and found the common ideas in each of them. Mrs. Cooper then made 4 groups that were each to build the base of the tree with their designs.  L.S. explained, "We are learning about how to make good structures with our Wishtree designs. We are learning how to keep things stable and give them support.” M.L. also added, "We were trying to make the base of the tree. My group put a box on the floor and then we used rope to tie the tree up. We made the tree out of 6 pieces of big cardboard.” Next week will will choose the best base and use that for our tree.

We cannot forget that “On Wednesday we did the Terry Fox run. We ran across the whole field. When we ran across we got tally marks to show how many times we ran around. We could get the tally marks on our hands or on our bibs. One lap around the field was half a kilometer.” -E. K. During literacy we also explored the learning intentions I can make jot notes to organize the information I have read and I can explore and create biographies. We learned a lot about Terry Fox, his life, his character traits and accomplishments.

Another highlight of our week was that “We went to the learning commons to learn the new system. The new system is that we have some lanyards to go have some working time in the library. Library day is Wednesday. Also, now we have ‘looking cards’. “ -S.J.
