October 17-21, 2022

We had another busy week in Room 6! We really enjoyed the last few days of nice weather, being outside for physical education, to collect leaves and to explore natural and human created waste.  A reminder to all families to have students dress for the weather. Students are outside for recess daily and we are often outside for physical education or other curricular learning.

This week was waste reduction week. We talked about what waste is and why it is important to manage our human waste. We learned a little bit about the ways to dispose of household waste in Calgary and started to explore "what goes where". We also surveyed our class to see what kind of waste we had in our snacks this week.

In physical education this week, we were focusing on throwing, specifically using the Discs (Frisbees) and bean bangs. We learned how changing different parts of our body movements can improve our throws. We also explored the learning intentions I can demonstrate what active living looks like and I can demonstrate awareness of my surroundings when we used various equipment to invent our own games. Ask us what game we created and what the rules were. Mrs. Cooper also taught us Disc Bocce.

In writing, we are working on building writing stamina and writing with detail. Here are some of the ways that we described parts of our week:

“This week in math we learned telling time. Mrs. Cooper got a giant clock. The big hand is the minutes. The small hand is the hours. The clock was yellow, blue and red.” – Grade 3 student

“This week in math we learned how to play a game to practice telling time. We flipped two cards. The red one was the hour hand and the black one was the minute. Then whoever could tell the time first got a point. –Z.K.

This week the grade 4s did some French. We learned Je m’apple which is  'my name is' and also comment t’apple tu? Which means 'what is your name'. We also had a lot of fun practicing greetings and the French we learned this week. I have a lot of fun doing French because I like learning a different language that is not English. I also like doing it because I have never learned a different language and I like knowing how other people speak everyday.” – K.J.

“This week in Social Studies we shared traditions like Christmas, Halloween and Thanksgiving. The best part of this week was going around the room and asking traditions from other people. One thing I learned this week was knowing everyone’s traditions.” – Grade 3 student

“This week in art we made a snowman with pastels and also with northern lights, two snowflakes and with a hill.” -E.Y.

“In art this week we used chalk pastels to draw snow man. We were being not so careful when we were getting colours. We used paper to make the northern lights.” –H.B.

“I like the snowman drawing because it is very easy to smudge and mix the colours together. It was so fun. One thing I don’t like is that it is very messy.” –A.E.

Also in writing, we were looking at the learning intentions: I can use poetry to communicate a thought, feeling or emotion as well as I can use poetic structures when writing poetry. After reading some poetry and looking at the features of poetry, we learned that poetry is an experience. It looks and sounds different from other writing. It should also make you feel or think about something. We then used our nature observations from last week to turn our descriptive words into beautiful poetry. Mrs. Cooper is looking forward to putting them on display.

A few other reminders from Mrs. Cooper:

  • Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable enough to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day.  In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.

  • The Halloween parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  Please email Mrs. Cooper if you do not want your child participating in Halloween activities, such as the parade, during the day.
  • November 1st will be the Spirit Day chosen by rooms 10 and 12. We will be having a pajama day. All staff and students are invited to wear their comfy PJs for the day.
  • You will notice that some student work is now being represented with the identifier “-a Grade 3 Student” or “-a Grade 4 student”.
