October 24-27

This week was another fast week in our room. To continue to explore our question “How can we celebrate differences in ourselves and in others?” we decided it was important to learn about other cultures to understand differences so that we can better understand differenecs in other people. After reading in groups, we learned that culture is “the way people live” and includes things like the clothes people wear, the food they eat, the languages they speak, their celebrations, traditions, art, music, dancing, beliefs and religion. And did you know that Diwali ended this week? We did some research and learned Diwali is an Indian celebration:

  • That “is also called Festival of Lights” – a grade 3 student
  • That “is the most biggest celebration in India” – a grade 4 student
  • Where “they eat a lot of sweets” – a grade 3 student
  • That “takes place in November or October depending on the moon” – a grade 3 student

E.Y. also read a myth about how Diwali began and explained, “there was a king who was captured. He got help by a monkey who made a bridge, defeated the wicked king, and was crowned king again. We were also very lucky because Mrs. Sidhu and Mrs. Kassam are our school experts on Diwali and Indian culture. Mrs. Sidhu brought in daiyas and explained how she and her family fill their house with lights to push away the evil. Ms. Kassam shared some of her clothing and even showed us how to put on a sari.

In math, we continued to practice telling time on an analogue clock. We also learned what am and pm mean. Did you know that we need to use am and pm to explain if we are talking about day or night because the clock only has room for 12 hours and there are 24 hours in a day. In learning how to tell time using “mintues to” and “minutes passed” the hour, we also explored fractions on a clock. In a fraction the top number means “how much there is” (-a grade 3 student) and the bottom number means “how many pieces in one whole” (-a grade 4 student).

In writing, we explored the learning intentions “I can use a plan to support my writing” and “I can include details and reasons in my writing to make it interesting”. Mrs. Cooper wanted to know about what our favorite treats or snacks were. Some of us like gummies because “they taste like sweet but sour with tiny salt that is sour like a lemon” – Z.K. and some of us like potato chips because “they are salty and kind of sour, crunchy and taste like potatoes” – M.L. After talking about our favorite treats (and getting hungry) we made a plan to record the details we wanted to include in our writing. We are working at turning our plans into a paragraph.

We also finished our chalk pastel art this week for our art cards. We can’t wait to show you what we have done while working on the two learning intentions, “I can refine, change and improve my artwork to give a finished appearance to the composition” and “I can use light and shadows to show depth.” Here is a sneak peak:

Of course, that’s not all!! Be sure to ask us about:

  • Word work, the “-ed” ending, what it means and all the sounds it can make (even though we spell it –ed each time)
  • Reading to our kindergarten buddies
  • Working on throwing and catching in physical education (we through chickens, pigs and fish!!)
  • Our predictions about what we think happens to natural waste like leaves; and
  • The best part of our week.

Mrs. Cooper also wants to let our grown-ups know:

  • Halloween is Monday! Please see last week’s post for information about Costumes and the parade!
  • Fun Lunch is back!! If you didn’t get the email it is because you need to opt into special messages, so please contact the office to make that happen. If you want information about fun lunch, please see the extra post about fun lunch.
