Our class learned and experienced so much this week! We continued to explore multiplication and division. The grade fours even tried a 3digit by 1digit multiplication problem on Thursday. We had a virtual presentation from Elder Alice who showed us items important to Nakota culture, and how these items portray the importance of family. With our buddies we learned about Lunar New Year and a student from Mr. Link’s class even brought in a Lion dance costume!

Here is what some of us wrote about our week:

“In buddies, we learned about Lunar New Year. We watched a video of an old legend about Nian. (Nian is part of what started Lunar New Year). In the legend, Nian attacked a village. The next day the villagers worked together to defeat Nian with loud noise, red and fire. “ ~Skyler

“We watched a video of an Indigenous Elder. She showed us three things, the moss bag, a duwedniyeze, and a gicimin. Her sister made the moss bag. You put moss in the moss bag and it is like a diaper for babies because they didn’t have diapers back then.” ~Zen & Max

“I am writing about our social studies jamboard that the grade fours did on Wednesday. What we did was all the grade fours had to get an iPad and go to google classroom. After that we went to our jamboard and sorted pictures of animals, plants/vegetation, landforms and climate for all of Alberta’s regions. But for this task we all had to work together. From this task I learned about the plants of regions which I was very interested with., like the Aspen tree and the Jack Pine tree. Lastly, I noticed exactly just how beautiful these places are!” ~ Ella

“We had a rock and tell for science. I brought a rock that looked like a tooth, and a rock that is black and white. The tooth looking one looked kinda real. It was also important to me.” ~ A grade 3 student

Did you know we had an assembly? We taught some kids and teachers Spellie. It was really fun. It was for Family Literacy Day. It was on Thursday. Miss Durnford and Miss Rooke read a book to the whole school.” ~ Penelope

Mrs. Cooper also wanted to thank those parents who reached out to help volunteer with our Artist in Residence program that is beginning on Monday. We are really looking forward to it.

Finally, as Friday is Family Literacy Day, we wanted to share some literacy games that you can do at home. Thanks to Ms. Brown for putting them together. Literacy Games for Families
