November 7-10, 2022

We began our week with a discussion on gratitude, and why it is important to be grateful for what we have. We discussed why it is especially important to reflect on the service of soldiers and how their efforts and sacrifices improve our quality of life. For Remembrance Day, we created a gratitude wreath that we displayed this week. On Remembrance Day, we were very luck that Ms. Burnham shared some very special family heirlooms. We looked at the special items and discussed what we noticed and what we wondered about them:

  • Harrison wondered, “What the flight badge was with the eagle on it and why there were three.”
  • Another grade three student wondered, “Did he win a medal? Was he in WWI or WWII? Are any of these from WWI?”
  • Ellie questioned, “Why would someone get badges, especially while they are in war.”
  • Darius was curious, “What are the ages [of the objects] and how did they get the badges.”

Mrs. Cooper shared some of the history of the medals that she learned from Ms. Burnham. Lillian then also shared a special family item, a picture of her Great, Great, Grandfather and a coin to commemorate Vimy Ridge where he died in service. It was a very special sharing circle that we had, discussing the importance of family, the importance of our Canadian history and the service of Canadian Soldiers.

We have also been working to improve our reading, using many different strategies to support our understanding. We are using text features of an article to support our reading, and learning how to use word parts and root words to decode new words. Mrs. Cooper then set up a Flipgrid so we could record ourselves reading. We are working on technology skills to access tools that can support our learning. For example, seeing ourselves read can help us to hear the words we are saying, how we say them and ways to improve our expression and flow.

In math, we continued to practice telling time and the grade fours explored measuring and determining the duration of time if we know when something started and when it ends. We also worked on some graphing skills and the learning intention “I can solve equations through adding and subtracting” through our morning math routines and math talks. We used learning materials to explore why the “opposite operation” can help solve an equation when you have an unknown.

Our class is also very excited to be taking care of some worms that Ms. Bouchard has graciously given us. They are decomposers, so we are exploring their role to break down natural waste and return nutrients to the soil. We are also learning to take care of animals as we have to feed them, make sure that they have enough moisture and also turn the soil to make sure oxygen gets replenished to the bottom.

Of course, there was so much more to our learning this week. Be sure to ask us about our descriptive writing that will be ready for us to share at conferences; word work looking at vowel pairs; Grade 4 French; Health with our buddies, and what we felt the best part of our week was.

Mrs. Cooper also wants to make sure that all parents know:
