Our field trip to Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation area was AMAZING! We learned that Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is 4,800 acres of protected area that is “beautiful, “amazing” and “full of nature”. We pretended to go back in time to see how the land has changed and how humans have made an impact on the land. We call this our ecological footprint. Skyler described an ecological footprint as “the mark we leave on the Earth by doing stuff in our everyday lives”. Max said that to him an ecological footprint is “how we are changing the world, taking away natural places like cutting trees, wasting paper or using gas.” We also learned that our ecological footprint is bigger now than it was when the Indigenous People lived off the land. Enayah explained that this is because “they used nature a different way than us.” Harrison also added that “they didn’t have cars,” and Zen shared that, “the Indigenous People killed bison or buffalo. They used every part of it. They didn’t want to waste any part”.

During our trip we saw so many things! Ask us about:

  • All the cow patties! (There was so much excitement about cow poop.) But also ask us if we remember why cows are allowed at Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation area;
  • The buffalo bean flower, the early blue violet, the crocus and other plants we saw throughout the day;
  • What a pocket gopher is, how they protect themselves from predators and why they are called pocket gophers;
  • Where we saw worm castings and why the Indigenous People call the full moon in March the “Worm Moon”;
  • How to quietly show that you see a deer on a hike (also ask us how many we saw); and
  • What our favorite part of the trip was.

Mrs. Cooper also wants to add that you will notice that she sent home our placemats. They are getting quite grungy and could use a wash. We have also decided as a class that it would be easier and more efficient if each of us bring our placemats to and from school each day. That way they can be cleaned at home and we will use fewer rags and less cleaner. This will help our class reduce our ecological footprint. Please remember that as part of our Montessori philosophy, all students are required to use a placemat for each snack and meal while at school. If a student forgets theirs they will use a paper towel, but to reduce our ecological footprint, we hope everyone will keep bringing their reusable one back and forth to school each day. Please let Mrs. Cooper know if you have any questions.

For any students that have not yet brought back their field trip forms for our Fish Release at McLean Pond, please be sure to do that on Monday. Our field trip is coming up quickly. Mrs. Cooper still also needs 1 volunteer for the trip so if you are able to attend please let her know.
