December 12-26, 2022

We want to send a huge thank you to Ms. Kawchuk for all the work she put into our fabulous Winter concert, and to all our grown-ups, friends and family for coming to watch us perform. We put a lot of effort into rehearsals this week, and were so excited to be able to show our skills.

We are also happy to share that we have rebuilt our Wishtree! We used what we learned the first time to reinforce and reattach the branches and to strengthen the base. However, we discovered that it was harder to repair our tree than it was to build it the first time, because we had to be more careful to not break the parts that were already built. It meant that we needed even more teamwork and cooperation than the first time. Our tree just needs a little more paper to cover up some of the repairs but we are happy to have it towering in our room once again.

In math, we began the week counting coins. We then made price tags for objects around the room and practiced finding the correct amount of money to “buy” the objects. This led to a discussion on decimals and fractions. The grade fours (and some of the grade threes) learned how to express money amounts in both dollars and cents, and why they represent the same amount. As we continued to count more coins of the same value and this led to a discussion on multiplication. For some of our grade threes this was a new concept while our grade fours reviewed what multiplication meant and how sets or groups can express it. We also learned we can show multiplication by repeated addition, by skip counting and with arrays.

We also continued to improve our writing skills, with a focus on sharing and revising after we write. The goal of our writing is to share ideas and express our thoughts and feelings. We were reminded this week that our first draft is an opportunity to get our ideas down, but sometimes the ideas do not make sense to someone else and we need to add more details.

Of course we did a lot more, including learning some dance moves in physical education, learning about Winter Solstice in our reading, and working on the word patterns – ance and –ice in word work.

Mrs. Cooper also has a few reminders. First, room 16 & 17 have organized SPIRIT WEEK as we are sliding into the holidays. See the infographic below for details, but the highlights:

  • Monday – Holiday Fun: wear any of your holiday “bling” or festive accessories
  • Tuesday – Ugly Sweater or holiday shirt: Wear your holiday shirt or sweater. Don’t have one? No worries, wear Red or Green or decorate a t-shirt with holiday decorations from home.
  • Wednesday – Grinch Green: Wear green or dress up as your favorite Grinch character
  • Thursday – Cozy Pajama Day

Also, room 4 & 7 have an update on their AARCS Fundraiser. Not only did they sell out of their homemade pet treats, they raised an incredible amount of money for AARCS. See details below, and thanks to everyone who supported this fundraiser.
