Our class cannot believe that it is December already! As always there are lots of exciting things happening in our room.

The most exciting is that our room is being painted next week. On Friday, we all needed to work together to tidy up our space, pack up what we need and shift some things so that the painters can get to where they need to be. Our class even went the extra mile, sweeping up behind where shelves were and dusting the room. We discussed why it is important to contribute and do our part.

As you know it was a cold week, and so we had a lot of indoor recesses and one indoor physical education. We explored active living options that we can do indoors and how we can use movement and rhythm to support active living. We did “Just Dance” in our classroom and really got our heart rates up!!


In math, we looked at the learning intentions “I can choose addition and subtraction strategies based on the nature of the number” and “I can use the standard algorithm for subtraction”. Some of us found it difficult to try a different strategy because we are used to one way. We talked about why it might be important to have more than one strategy, to be more efficient. For example, thinking of the number 500 – 498, it is easier to count up 2 to 500, than it is to stack the numbers and use the standard algorithm.

In writing, we are continuing to elaborate on our ideas and to make our writing more interesting. To begin the week we talked about simple and compound sentences and practiced writing compound sentences. We learned that by varying the types of sentences in our writing, it can make things more interesting for our readers. We then went through the writing process of brainstorming, making a plan and then writing a draft about our favorite place.

Of course, we did so much more! Be sure to ask us about:

  • Learning about our worms, how to take care of them and interesting facts. (Be sure to ask us about the worm that escaped too while we were observing it!!!)
  • The landscapes of India, Peru, Tunisia and Ukraine for the grade 3s
  • Our French classroom objects  “amenez moi s'il vous plaît” (please bring me) race for objects in grade 4

We had such a fantastic week of learning! We cannot believe it was our second last week together. The year has gone so fast! We had two big highlights from the week, learning about Indigenous Culture and our Tower Garden Salad Celebration. Wednesday, June 21, 2023 was National Indigenous People’s Day. It was a great opportunity for the grade 4s to share with the grade 3s what they have learned this month about the history of Indigenous People in Alberta. We also took some time to go a bit deeper into Indigenous Culture, listening to Indigenous music like the song Ukiuk by the Jerry Cans and also learning about the three Indigenous Flags that were gifted to our school. We also had an assembly and the Land Acknowledgement that we did at our sharing assembly was used for this one. We were very honoured that they asked us to use it.   This week was another fast week in our room. To continue to explore our question “How can we celebrate differences in ourselves and in others?” we decided it was important to learn about other cultures to understand differences so that we can better understand differenecs in other people. After reading in groups, we learned that culture is “the way people live” and includes things like the clothes people wear, the food they eat, the languages they speak, their celebrations, traditions, art, music, dancing, beliefs and religion. Our field trip to Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation area was AMAZING! We learned that Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area is 4,800 acres of protected area that is “beautiful, “amazing” and “full of nature”. We pretended to go back in time to see how the land has changed and how humans have made an impact on the land. We call this our ecological footprint. Skyler described an ecological footprint as “the mark we leave on the Earth by doing stuff in our everyday lives”. Max said that to him an ecological footprint is “how we are changing the world, taking away natural places like cutting trees, wasting paper or using gas.” We also learned that our ecological footprint is bigger now than it was when the Indigenous People lived off the land.
