January 9-13, 2023

Happy new year to all of our Room 6 Families! This week was not only our first school week of 2023, there were many other new things happening! Here are a few things we wanted to share:

“Did you know we got a new adult in our class? She is learning to become an EA. If we need help she is always there to help you. Her name is Ms. Suzie. She is here on Tuesday – Wednesday. She is very helpful.” – a grade 3 student

“They just finished painting our gym and we got a new logo in our gym and a new gym floor. The floor is much cleaner. And the floor is sound proof. We have new lines in the gym. It is way cleaner. It has a circle in the middle. I like the paint more than the other one.” – Zen, Max & Jonah

“Did you know that room 5’s room was getting painted so they stayed in our room? We loved having them here. It was Super duper fun! But when we were in gym room 5 secretly put thank you cards on Miss Coopers desk. We thought I was really thoughtful of them. We wish they could have stayed longer but the painters were done painting. We were heart broken to not see them in our classroom the next morning.” – Penelope & Ellie

But that is not all that is new! Mrs. Cooper too us to the learning commons on Monday. She explained that her and Mrs. Bouchard set up a tank the week before. We had to look at it to find clues to see what might be coming. We talked about making good observations that provide a lot of detail and how we can use those observations to make predictions. We don’t know what is coming yet, but a few things we know:

  • The tank is filled with water
  • There is a chiller on the floor underneath that has tubes going to the tank
  • There are two see through and one black one that has a basket looking thing on the end
  • There is “pink panther” board on the outside
  • We can’t wait to see what is coming!

In math we explored parallel, perpendicular and intersecting lines. We then took this new knowledge and explored the new lines in the gym. We are also working on the following learning intentions in math:

  • I can model what multiplication means.
  • I can solve multiplication problems within 100 using skip counting, repeated addition, making groups or making arrays.
  • I can find patterns in a multiplication chart.

When we reflect on the week we are always amazed at how much we do! Also ask us about:

  • Our new class read aloud “Song for a Whale” and the predictions we made;
  • Our reading groups and which book we are reading; and
  • Grade 4 French and the game we played.
Finally, if you have not yet seen the "Support Our School" initiative, Ms. Rooke asked us to share this information. Education Matters has launched this new initiative for parents and community members to donate to our school. Please feel free to check it out or share with others who might be interested in making a donation to Lake Bonavista School. We can use these donations to purchase books for our school, new technology and other initiatives. See the picture below for more information.
