February 20-24, 2023
First, Mrs. Cooper would like to thank all of the students
for their awesome work while she was away, a thanks to Ms. Demarco for taking
such great care of our class, and also for all of the kind words and cards.
It was a fantastic and exciting week with our first field trip of the year. The Calgary Hitmen BE BRAVE anti-bullying game was not only a great atmosphere, but it also allowed us to have some great conversations about conflict and bullying behaviour. We spent some time before the game learning about the history of pink shirt day, and ways that we can help connect people who experience bullying. We started brainstorming other ideas of what we can do to prevent bullying, and what it was like for each of us at the game. Many of us thought it was cool that Mrs. Cooper's son was playing there in his first WHL game. Next week we will use these ideas for paragraph writing.
In math, we are continuing to practice our recall of multiplication facts. We are encouraged to practice at home as well with games like dice roll, salute or multiplication wars. It would be great to teach our grown-ups some of these games, so please ask us about them! Grade threes are working to recall multiplication and related division facts up to 10 x10 and the grade fours are working to 12 x 12. This week we also continued to explore ways to represent division and learned about remainders.
In social studies, we revisited our work with Ms. Sharon and recalled how different cultures and resources available from different places influence the textiles from that area. When Mrs. Cooper asked us why textiles are different from different countries or provinces, here are just some of the ideas we came up with:
“Each place has different things to make them. They have
different materials. Their own culture makes their own textile.” – Emma M.
“The shape and colour are different. The colour can
represent the culture. If they drew animals, they can represent the place.” –
Will
“On different textiles, there are different patterns. They
use different techniques of weaving and knotting. There can be different shapes
and symbols.” - Ellie
“On different textiles, there are different textures and
feelings because they are made of different things like silk, cotton or wool.” –

We can’t wait to show you our art from our work with Ms.
Sharon at Student Led Conferences on March 9 and 10th. Speaking of
conferences, please be sure to sign up via conference manager early next week. Information has been sent out via email from Ms. Rooke.
Conferences will be student led this time, meaning that each student will take their grown-ups to various stations where they can
demonstrate the skills we have been working on, and show the progress we
are making. When you sign up in conference manager, you will be selecting a 45
minute block of time. There will be up
to 3 other families in the room at that time as well, but enough stations to go
through that there will not be overlap. During your scheduled time slot, one of
the stations will be to meet with Mrs. Cooper to have a short conference about
our learning and progress.
Also, Scholastic Book Fair is coming to our school again during Student Led Conferences! To adapt to our changing needs, Scholastic has developed a Hybrid Book Fair (in-school with a virtual link) to provide an opportunity for our students and families to experience the joy of reading together. So, save the date! Our Scholastic Virtual Book Fair will take place on: Monday, March 6th till Monday, March 13th. When it’s time to shop, you can choose to visit the virtual link and purchase online or in person during Student-Led Conferences. More information to come! Stay tuned!
Ms. Rooke and Ms. Durnford also asked us to share the
following message: It is that time of year again, when we begin planning for
our upcoming school year. In order for us to make the most accurate and
informed plans possible, please take a moment to fill out the following form
indicating your plans for your child(ren) for the 2023/2024 school year: Plans for 2023-2024 School Year. This
is the same form sent out earlier in the Friday School Messenger so if you have
already completed it, please disregard.
