February 28 - March 4, 2023

This week in Room 6, we spent a lot of time continuing to explore our question: “How do we celebrate diversity in others and in ourselves?” One way we did this, was with our continued work in Social Studies on exploring India, Tunisia, Ukraine, Peru, and Alberta through the celebration tables we are going to share next week. We did research on the textiles from these places and continued to connect what we learned to the natural resources and cultures in these areas. When we finished our research, we created paragraphs in groups so that we could make an audio recording of the information that we found. Next week, all of our celebration tables will be set up and we will visit each one and listen to the audio recordings that each group made.

Another way that we explored diversity and acceptance was through our work in Wellness and Literacy. By understanding differences in each other and celebrating those differences, hopefully we can reduce conflict and misunderstandings. However, we are also learning that conflict is natural. Conflict means that each person has a need that wants to me met, like each wanting to read the same book, or use the same playground equipment. We need to learn how to solve conflict and understand each other’s point of view.  Finally, in Wellness we also looked at other behaviors (rude, mean/aggressive and bullying) to understand the difference of each and how we can address each type of behavior that we might see in others.

In writing, we continued to explore paragraph writing and how to make our writing interesting using the “show don’t tell” strategy. Throughout the week we worked through our process of idea generation, writing a draft, sharing and getting feedback, editing and revising when writing about Pink Shirt Day and our experience at the Be Brave Game. We are looking forward to sharing this writing with you at Student Led Conferences on March 9 and 10.

Of course we did so much more! Ask us about:

  • Our class novel “Song for a Whale”, what is happening in the book and our predictions for what might happen;
  • What division means and the personal strategy we use for division;
  • Snowshoeing and floor hockey in physical education; and
  • The Fish Tank observations this week and what information we know that can help us identify what kind of fish they are.

Finally, Mrs. Cooper has a few very important announcements:

  • Conferences on Thursday and Friday will be student led. This means that each student will take their grown-ups to various stations where they can demonstrate the skills we have been working on, and show the progress they are making. During your scheduled time slot, one of the stations will be to meet with Mrs. Cooper to have a short conference about individual student learning and progress. PLEASE NOTE: The conference manager is not displaying conference booking times correctly in the chart. The school has tried very hard to fix this, but is unable. Please be sure to note the times when you are booking to avoid confulsion.
