March 13-17, 2023

This week we had a lot on the go with Pi Day, International Math Day, St. Patrick’s Day and our fish inquiry.

In math, we started the week exploring circles, what “pi” is and relating that to our study of fractions. We also explored math in nature after reading an article about the Fibonacci sequence. We learned that number patterns can apply to plants, shells, pine cones and more. Then we explored the pattern and drew our own Fibonacci spiral. Also in math we are exploring the learning intention “I can compare and order fractions”.

In writing, we are learning more about Humpback whales so we can better understand Blue-55 as we continue to read A Song For A Whale. Our learning intentions are: “I can organize jot notes under appropriate headings” and “I can understand the features of non-fiction texts”.

Our fish are growing bigger and we spent the week making final observations to help us identify our fish. We learned about the key characteristics used to identify fish in Alberta and then used guides to make our predictions. Using collaboration and critical thinking we each made predictions. Here is just one conversation Mrs. Cooper overheard:

“I don’t think it can be any of those because there are no spots in the middle.”

“No, because the tail is different. It’s transparent.”

“But that is an adult fish.”

“But do you think the stripes on it are the same? Because these have more dots.”

We find out on Monday what species our fish is and we are all really excited!

Also be sure to ask us about our “Leprechaun Launchers”. Pictures and results of our testing to come next week.
