April 17-21, 2023

When we look at the calendar we cannot believe that we are approaching the end of April!! It feels like our year is going so fast. However when Mrs. Cooper looks at the growth in our reading, writing, math and critical thinking skills, she can really tell how much work we have put in this year.

The focus of our writing this week was on procedural writing with a continued emphasis on making our writing clear and interesting for our readers. We explored the use of various transition words to make our writing flow together and to make sure that it was interesting. We talked a lot about how writing should sound the way that we speak with interesting word choices and making sure it doesn’t sound like a list. Finally, we made sure that we had a topic sentence that introduced our paragraph, and then a concluding sentence that wrapped up our ideas.

Another big focus of our week was developing healthy relationships and how to deal with “healthy conflict”. We talked about how conflict is normal, and the way we approach conflict is important. To do this, we made skits in class to share an example of a normal healthy conflict and also how we would solve it in a positive way. We are focusing on sharing our point of view during conflict by first explaining how we feel, what action made us feel that way and why.

We also earned our final “helping heart” in lunch room which means that we have earned a reward! We discussed what we want as a class with Ms. Budd and Mrs. Cooper and our reward is some extra outside time, eating lunch in our classroom and also pajama and stuffy day. This will all happen on Tuesday April 25th. Please make sure that if your child brings a stuffy, that it is not an extra special one in case it gets forgotten at school. It is also Spirit Day on Wednesday April 26th which is pattern day, so dress in fun and wacky patterns!!

As always, we did so much more! Be sure to also ask us about:

  • the climber in gymnastics and controlled, safe movements;
  • naming, comparing and ordering decimals in grade 4 math;
  • approaches to solving word problems and choosing the correct operation in grade 3 math;
  • making pixle art in math that can be expressed as decimals and fractions;
  • starting up the tower garden and parts of a plant;
  • our new work with Ms.Sharon including patterns in nature;
  • beginning our “just right book” in independent reading;
  • saying goodbye to Ms. Susie (our EA practicum students); and
  • our favorite part of the week.

Mrs. Cooper also wants to share about the Spring Flower Fundraiser from School Council. This year, we are excited to offer two plant fundraisers to shop from. Saskatoon Farms is a local experience and garden centre that will not disappoint! Planstie is a local, trendy indoor plant retailer that offers modern options for your home! Flower pick-up is scheduled for May 25th between 2:00 – 3:30 pm in the school parking lot. Thank you for supporting our school and your child’s classroom!
