April 3-6, 2023

Happy Early Easter to those in our class who celebrate. A reminder that tomorrow, Friday April 7 is Good Friday so there is no school. Monday is also a learning day for teachers so we hope everyone enjoys and extra long weekend!

We wanted to share that room 6 and room 5 are learning how to make psyanky eggs in Social Studies. Pysanky eggs are Ukrainian Easter eggs and they are part of their culture. This week we read three legends to explain why Psyanky is so important to the Ukrainian culture. The three legends were different, but also similar in some ways. All of them shared the message that it is important to spread love and kindness to friends, family and nature. We were lucky enough to share what we know about psyanky eggs with our kindergarten buddies on Thursday, and help them explore patterns while we decorated paper psyanky eggs with them.

We also learned that we would be making our own pysanky eggs next week. Ms. Bouchard and Mrs. Cooper told us that if we are going to carry eggs to school and home, we have to make a nest. This is to be done at home with items around the house. If you haven’t already, please remember to bring three raw, white eggs and create a nest that has a lid or top that stays shut, has cushiony protection for the egg, and that has your name or initials on it. Please bring them on Tuesday if possible because we will be doing our eggs first thing on Wednesday morning. On Wednesday, we will be heating up a kyska with a candle then dipping them in wax and then we are going to do a design.

Thank you to those grown-ups who have volunteered to help. We could also use a few volunteers on Thursday of next week to help remove the wax and uncover our beautiful designs. If you can help us out, please email Mrs. Cooper.

This week was also our first week of gymnastics. We are starting out mats this week and we are continuing with more mats next week too. This week our focus was on moving at different levels and balances. Remember to be prepared for more gymnastics next week by having hair elastics with you (or hair tied up) if you have long hair, wearing comfy clothes that are easy to move in and wearing a t-shirt under a hoodie if you wear one.

Of course we did so much more! Ask us about:

  • How big our fish are getting;
  • The tower garden and what we planted;
  • The peas from Mrs. Cooper’s lunch that started to sprout;
  • What is happening in our novel “A Song for a Whale”;
  • Putting fractions on a number line and what benchmark fractions are;
  • Equivalent fractions;
  • How to write great topic sentences for non-fiction writing; as well as
  • Our best part of the week!!
