May 1-4, 2023

Wow! Another busy week! We are building board games in social studies to show our understanding and to teach others some new information. The grade threes have been exploring the question “How does daily life and access to services reflect the quality of life in various communities?” After discussing what things contribute to a good quality of life and what things contribute to a poorer quality of life, each group looked at daily life and services in one of the four countries we are studying.
  Some of us have built games where we move forward or get points if we land on a part of daily life that adds to a good quality of life. Others are making maps and adding things that represent what daily life is like in that country.

The grade fours are exploring how diverse and culturally rich Alberta is while exploring the question “How does Alberta’s fossil heritage make Alberta unique?” Their games are going to teach others about the fossils in Alberta, and what you should do if you find one. We cannot wait to finish and share our games next week.

In math the grade fours have been learning to add and subtract decimals, and the grade threes have been continuing to develop strategies for mental math and solving word problems. Mrs. Cooper and Mr. Link are going to be sharing more about this at School Council on Tuesday March 9, at 6:00pm. If you would like to hear more (and also see a bit of what a school council meeting is like), please be sure to pop in. This month’s meeting is in person.

Of course that is not all! Be sure to ask us about:

  • Our new spelling bee game and the word patterns we are learning about in word work;
  • Our “Song for a Whale” novel and our final predictions as we will be finishing this up next week;
  • What the grade fours have been learning in Health in our “Growth and Development” unit;
  • Tracing products back to the land for our “Land and You” project and also our Fish; and
  • Our favorite part about this week!

Mrs. Cooper would also like to thank everyone for all of the paperwork that has come home recently. We are so lucky to be having Netball next week, and also our Ann & Sandy Field trip coming up on this upcoming Thursday, May 11. If you have not yet done so, please go to MyCBE to pay the field trip fee

Mrs. Cooper is also going to be sharing more information about Ann & Sandy Cross Conservation Area with the students next week. The program is actually free of charge (the cost of the trip that parents paid is to cover bussing) and the program requests donations for those that would like to contribute. If you would like to support this conservation area and the programs they offer, please send a small cash donation with your child early next week. Receipts cannot be given for these donations. If everyone brings just a loonie, we can make a great contribiution from our class.

On Thursday, students also brought home another field trip form for our fish release field trip to McLean Pond on Wednesday, May 24. Mrs. Cooper needs three volunteers for this trip, so please send her an email if you are able to attend this full day trip.
