The highlight of our week was most definitely our Fish
Release at McLean Pond. It was such an amazing experience! We definitely want
to thank Ms. Rooke and our fantastic volunteers because they helped Mrs. Cooper
and Ms. Bouchard make this wonderful trip possible.
“When we were releasing the fish, we couldn’t just let them
go into the water. We had to check to make sure the water was clean enough for
them to live in. We tested the turbidity, the pH, dissolved oxygen and the temperature.
When we were releasing the fish we also had to put the pond water into the
baggie so they could get used to the water.” – a grade 3 student
It was really fun when we were releasing the fish, but we
couldn’t just put them in the pond because they needed to acclimatize. We had
to put them in a baggie and pour some of the pond water into the bag with the
fish so they would get used to it.” –E.B.A.
I thought it [the day] was kind of happy because we were able to release them, but I was also sad because I might not see them ever again. – A.E.
It was really exciting when we got to go to a place we have
never been before. Also, we gave our fish a new home which made me feel really
sad that the fish had to go.” -H.B.
We didn’t just release the fish. We also got to see
goslings!! Goslings are baby geese. We saw them hiding in the tall grass on a
small piece of land close to the water. When we got close, the parents [of the
geese] started to make themselves look bigger and flaring their wings. They
were doing this to protect their babies.” -E.A.
“There was also a crow or a raven. The parents led the baby
geese into the water to protect them.” -P.O.
As you can see, there was so much learning that led up to our fish release, but also on the day. We did so much more this week also! In math we are focusing on measurement and also how to make a math sentence from a word problem and solve them using efficient strategies.
Mrs. Cooper would like to remind everyone that although we
work on recall of our basic facts at school, when students practice at home, it
reinforces the concepts and supports the work we do at school. All students
should have a solid understanding of adding and subtracting to 20 using mental
math. In the new written curriculum, grade threes should be able to recall
multiplication facts to 10x10 as well as their related division facts. Grade
fours should be able to recall multiplication facts to 12x12 as well as their
related division facts. Please be sure to quiz us at home to see where we are
at. We have done a lot of work with all of our times tables and should be able
to recall them.
Also a reminder to RSVP to Mrs. Cooper, or the teacher of
the oldest child in your family if you are able to attend the volunteer tea. We
want to show an appreciation for all the work and support our volunteers have
done.
Finally, we have our sharing assembly with Mr. Link’s class
in June! The final date is still being determined, so watch your email and next
week’s blog post for the date so you can reserve it in your calendar. We would
love for as many family members to attend as possible to watch us showcase our
learning!
